"Did Z cry again last night?"...That was the standard conversation piece among the neighbours most mornings and the subject of such concern was my daughter Z. A colicky baby, she was prone to wake up in the middle of the night bawling and keeping us, her parents, and the neighbours awake.
Being young parents, we were often at a loss as to how to handle Z but we soon discovered that the best remedy was to take her on a late night drive and soon she was sleeping again.
Staying in a compact house, we were as close to the neighbours as our homes were. I did not feel antagonised in any way, in fact it reassured me that the neighbours were keeping an eye out for us.
