I was washing my hands in a restroom in Sg Wang when a hint of unpleasant smell pierced my nose. From the mirror reflection, I could see a woman with unruly hair and filthy clothes walked past behind me. She stood next to me and flipped her hair.
We quickly walked out from the toilet as we worried she might run amok. My mind scattered, fishing out stories I read from the newspapers or conversations heard from people. Imagine getting raped or robbed. I wondered how she get money to buy pads for her monthlies. I think too much sometimes.
We ordered our meals and plunked our asses at the hard cold seats at McDonald’s which are not designed for comfort.
There, we saw her again, sitting on the half moon shaped fountain. The lady with unruly hair and filthy clothes who might ran amok. Whom I worried having no money to buy pads.
She was staring at us. I quickly looked away as if she were invisible. Perhaps, she was hungry. Somehow, my instincts went tingling and my guard was up. I stole quick glances at her with the corner of my eyes as my friends and I chatted away.
Like a lioness contemplating her moves to hunt, she laid low. She slowly paced her walk towards us and suddenly picked up speed. My gut feeling made me hold onto my chocolate sundae. We screamed out loud as she pounded our table and walked away with our burgers.
We were shocked. Then, we gathered ourselves and smiled sheepishly at the curious onlookers who were equally baffled at what had happened.
“You want some fries?” my friend smiled as she offered me the hyena’s share of the value meal.
I laughed.
