Riding for the Disabled

Bukit Kiara Equestrian Centre // 16 Apr 2010 // by Zuraidah Omar // 1 person likes this story
They come on Tuesdays and Thursdays to Bukit Kiara Equestrian Centre. Children who cannot walk or hold items in their hands because of cerebral palsy or other condition; children who have Down Syndrome or autism. They come to ride horses.

It's a treat for them - to be on a large animal and to move with it, to sit high above everyone else, to play games with hoops and balls, to blow bubbles and to see the soapy suds floating up into the air. But there is method to these games. They move their arms and legs to get the horses to go; they laugh and gain confidence and self-esteem.

It's a treat for us too - volunteers with the Riding for the Disabled Association of Malaysia, Bukit Kiara Branch. It gives us a chance to help those less fortunate than us; it helps us spend a meaningful two hours twice a week; it humbles us to see the dedication and love of these children's parents; and it uplifts us to see the joy and determination of the children themselves.

We waste hours in front of the tv or lingering in shopping complexes. Why not spend it in being useful to others instead?
