Life As We Know It

Kampung Orang Asli // 02 May 2010 // by Adrian Lim // 2 people like this story
On a street not very far away, lived a happy family of 7. One Sunday morning, they trotted out of their home. There was the wise father, the nurturing mother, 4 sturdy sons, and the only lovely daughter. As they went about their business on different parts of the street, it seemed they never stood together. The children were of course closer in comparison to the parents, who were a little further away. Nevertheless, they were still visible in each others' eyes.

At both ends of the street stood an old woman and an old man. Whenever any of them had any problems, they would go to either the woman in white or the man in black. They were helpful and kind, loving and generous but on the contrary, there were also cruel and selfish, hateful and greedy. In short, there were the most perfect definition of human beings ever lived.

At noon, the scorching sun was high up in the sky. That marked their lunch time. So, the 7 of them retreated home. It seemed that within several hours, they have aged. The children were no longer toddlers. They were in their teens.

After the scrumptious meal of Shepherd's Pie, they resumed their activities. This time, they moved further up the street. Work and play continued as usual. At sun set, they went home. That marked their dinner time. As they were eating , both the parents looked old. They had wrinkles on their faces and strains of whites in their hair. Their children were adults.

The eldest son said to his sister "Life is fast, isn't it?"
and she responded, "Indeed. That's why we have to cherish each & every moment. 365 is just 365 days."
