"Ah Soh, sik bau lah?"
Mrs C merely nodded.
"Where's Si Tau?"
"He went out."
"I haven't eaten yet. And I left my wallet at home. Can treat me lunch today?"
She looked up from the newspaper.
"Listen, my friends and I, we help to look after you, your shop, this whole area. The other shops, they show us their appreciation. You should, too."
He had a little smile on his face. There was none on hers. They stared at each other. He was the first to look away.
"Does your mother know what you're doing?"
"What? What does my mother have to do with this?"
"Everyone has a mother. Is she proud of you? This is no way to earn a living."
"Eh, Ah Soh, you know Botak Chin? He also started this way, what."
"Yes, and look what happened to him."
